February 25 Get some new themes for your Space! They’ve been spending a lot of time lately working on making your space load faster and adding cool video features; but they know that you all LOVE new themes and customization options. So they asked a few of the designers from Windows Live to create some new default themes for you all. AND, if you’re into basketball – there are a bunch of LeBron James themes under the sports category as part of the upcoming LeBron challenge on MSN (more on that coming soon). Themes by category: Art: Music and entertainment: Nature: Objects: Patterns: Sports: Check them out below: Note: All of these themes are available in English speaking countries now and will be available worldwide at the end of the month with the exception of the Lebron themes which are currently only available in the US. Also, don’t forget that if you’re using the “Colors” feature to change the colors in your space (for text, links, backgrounds etc.), that your colors will be applied to the new themes when you browse through them. To see the themes without your colors, go to Customize > Colors and click the link to “Clear your settings and use the default colors” (if you don’t click Save, you won’t lose your custom colors if you decide you don’t like any of the new themes. Make sure you click Cancel!) There are now 3 ways to post videos to your SpaceMany of you have asked us how you can post videos on your Space. We wanted to let you know that as of the last release, there are now three ways to post videos on Spaces depending on how you want to present the videos. You can get information below as well as on the Spaces Video information page. Option 1: Share videos that you like on Spaces You can also include videos that other people have uploaded onto the Internet sites by using the Universal Video Player gadget or the YouTube Video gadget. Option 2: Embed a video in a blog entry When you compose a blog entry on Spaces, just click the "Embed Videos" link at the bottom of the Compose Entry page and paste the video embed code into the window. Option 3: Quickly share and control your videos with Mixpo on Windows Live Spaces Mixpo is easy to use and fast to get the videos into you Space – your videos are viewable online in seconds. In addition, with Mixpo, you are in total control to change, add, delete or modify your Mixcard from your computer without having to re-upload the videos. Now Spaces users can really share their digital stories in a creative and safe way. You can learn more about the different video offerings for Spaces here. Cheers The “Radio for Spaces” GadgetThe new “Radio for Spaces” gadget will allow you (and your friends) to create a free custom radio station and listen to your favorite tunes while on Spaces. Radio for Spaces Gadget: The gadget was created by the folks at Pandora, one of the coolest music applications on the net (IMHO). This is not your grandma’s internet radio. Enter a song or artist and Pandora will tap into their “Music Genome” and create a radio station just for you. Whether you are into Ska or Metal, Hip Hop or Kraut Rock, Pandora will play songs that suit your taste. The more input you give in the form of adding more bands to a station or giving thumbs up/thumbs down reviews of tracks being played the more personalized the station will become. Once you create a station your friends can listen to it while reading your space by clicking on the station name in the gadget. Clicking on a station opens a new window containing the Pandora player. This means you’ll be able to browse Spaces or update your space without the music being interrupted. The MSN radio powered by Pandora player (pops up in it’s own window): It is free to listen to and create stations with Pandora and the
music plays without any commercial interruptions. This service is
currently only available in the U.S. Note: Pandora is an internet radio
service and not an on-demand listening experience. Typing “Freebird”
into the player will not result in “Freebird” instantly playing on your
station – songs and artists that sound like “Freebird” will play – and
if you listen long enough you’ll probably hear “Freebird" too. Tips for adding the gadget to your space: To display your stations sign up for a free Pandora account (you’ll be prompted by the Pandora player to do so). If you already have a Pandora account: find your stations by entering the same e-mail address you use with Pandora. Launch the Pandora player and start listening here. Add the Radio for Spaces gadget here. Enjoy! February 04 New Discovery May Help Transplants Survive; Blocking Growth Factor Stops Rejection ProcessScience Daily — Boston, MA For the first time scientists have found that a growth factor called vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3 (VEGFR-3), known to cause the growth of lymphatic vessels in the body, controls how immune cells traffic (move) within the eye and also stimulates the immune system to reject corneal transplants--the most common type of transplantation performed. The researchers from the Schepens Eye Research Institute and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, both affiliates of Harvard Medical School, have also found that when this growth factor is blocked, corneal transplants survive. The study, published in the August issue of Nature Medicine, is the first to make a link between VEGEFR-3 and the body's immune response, and may hold significant promise not only for new treatments to prevent transplant rejection but also for diseases such as cancer that may proliferate because of VEGF-3. "What we have discovered is a previously unknown connection or 'pathway' that stimulates the immune response in the eye and in other parts of the body," says Reza Dana, MD, MPH, a Senior Scientist at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, an Associate Professor and corneal specialist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School, and the senior author of the study. Each year, nearly 40 thousand Americans receive corneal transplants to replace injured or diseased corneas. Approximately 90 percent of corneal transplants are successful because the eye is intrinsically less likely to reject transplanted material than other parts of the body. However, to suppress rejection of corneal transplants, patients need to use steroid drops which can cause glaucoma, cataract development, and infection -- for years. Even then, many corneal transplants fail, and their failure can cause devastating vision loss. If transplants are placed in eyes suffering from inflammation (caused by a full-blown immune response to the original injury or disease), rejection rates go well over 50 percent, regardless of the therapy employed. "We are trying to understand what is happening at the molecular level so that we can arrest this process," says Dana, who has devoted much of his research to finding the mechanisms that trigger immune responses, and, in the case of corneal transplants, the "unwanted" immune response that causes corneal transplant rejection. VEGFR-3's role in activating the immune response in the cornea is the most recent in a series of discoveries by Dana and his research team in their exploration of the immune response to corneal transplants. In the normal immune response, cells known as antigen-presenting cells (APCs) are activated when they detect the presence of proteins (also known as "antigens") from foreign intruders such as bacteria, or, in the case of transplantation, proteins from other people. The job of the APCs -- which exist in all body tissues -- is to notify the immune system of the foreign tissue, pick up that tissue and then travel through vessels known as lymphatics to the lymph nodes where they can activate immunity. In the lymph nodes, APCs present the foreign protein to T Cells, which then custom design an immune attack to destroy the invader. In previous work, Dana and his team found that removing the lymph nodes that drain the eyes prevented rejection of transplants that were vulnerable. They also found that VEGFR-3, known to cause the growth of lymphatic vessels, was expressed on the APCs and new lymphatic vessels were present in the corneas that were inflamed (or under immune attack.) In the August Nature Medicine study, Dana and his colleagues hypothesized that when a cornea becomes inflamed, VEGFR-3 becomes activated on the antigen-presenting cells. They also believed that VEGFR-3 then triggered the APCs to move into the lymphatic vessels en route to the lymph nodes to make contact with the T-cells. Using in-the-dish (in vitro) and living mice (in vivo), the team was able to show that VEGFR-3 was responsible for mobilizing APCs to move into the lymphatic system. Next, the research team blocked VEGFR-3 in mice using a specific protein (immunoglobulin) known to impede its function. When the VEGFR-3 was blocked, the APCs were also prevented from entering the lymphatic system, and the immune response was arrested. "We had never seen this connection before," says Dana. He added that while this connection was determined for the eye, it may well operate in other tissues as well. While Dana says it is not yet clear exactly how this discovery will translate to the clinical setting, he believes continued study of this new pathway has potential for improving transplantation in the eye and potentially other parts of the body. And, it could be a new piece of the cancer puzzle. "It has been shown that antigen presenting cells around tumors also express VEGFR-3 and we already know that access to lymphatics and lymph nodes is the way cancers spread through the body," he says. "The findings of Dr. Dana and his colleagues provide new insights into transplant immunology and biology which go well beyond the eye, and offer new therapeutic approaches in organ transplantation and cancer treatment. Dr. Dana is clearly one of the outstanding physician scientists in our department," says Joan W. Miller, MD, Chief and Chair of Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School. ### Schepens Eye Research Institute is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and the largest independent eye research institute in the world. January 23 Pollution destroying pre-Aztec Mexican ruinsMEXICO CITY, Mexico (Reuters) -- Oil refineries and power stations pumping acid air pollutants along Mexico's Gulf coast threaten to erase carved stone murals at the pre-Aztec ruined city of El Tajin, a scientist said on Sunday. Air pollution specialist Humberto Bravo said acid levels in the air around El Tajin, in oil producing Veracruz state, were among the highest in Mexico. El Tajin's architecture is famous for intricate reliefs, many depicting an ancient Mesoamerican ball game sometimes compared to basketball. "If nothing is done, within 10, 20 or 100 years, the hieroglyphics will disappear," said Bravo, from Mexico's UNAM university. Bravo, who spent four years simulating the effects of polluted air and acid rain on El Tajin's soft limestone buildings, blamed the erosion on contaminants like chlorine, sulfates and nitrates in the air from power stations and oil refineries. Veracruz and neighboring states are home to some of Mexico's most important oil facilities and ports. The city was built on the tropical coast of Veracruz by the Totonac civilization and was at its height from the early 9th to early 13th century. The Aztecs, who ruled Mexico when the Spanish arrived, were at their strongest in the 13th and 14th centuries. At its peak, the city, home to an elaborate niche-studded pyramid, was a power in an area that extended toward today's border with Texas and south into the realm of the Maya civilization. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1992. January 09 Login / Welcome Screen TutorialNOTE: I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING RELATED TO THIS TUTORIAL THAT CAUSES ANY ERRORS ON YOUR COMPUTER.
With that out of the way, let’s get on with it.
I was tired of my default windows XP login screen, and thought it would be cool to make my own. So I did, and now I’m writing a tutorial about how you can do it.
Part I: The Bitmaps
1. First, go to your Windows\system32 folder and COPY your logonui.exe file to another directory. (I suggest Desktop.)
NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU COPY THE FILE, NOT MOVE IT. YOU MIGHT ALSO WANT TO BACK UP YOUR OLD ONE, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO.
2. Download ResourceHacker and unzip it to the desired location.
3. Open ResHacker and open (File > Open) the copy of the logonui.exe (not the original)
4. Let’s start with the Bitmaps. Here’s a run-down of what’s what.
-100: Background of the Login screen. Make sure you remember what the resolution of your image is, we’ll need it. -102: Password Box. You might want to change the border color if you have a solid background
The Rest really don’t concern us, but you’ll see what they are if you view them.
5. Right, let’s get to work. Go to Action > Replace Bitmap. Click on 100, then go over and click on “Open file with new bitmap.” Go to the bitmap file of the background image you want, and click Open. Then click Replace.
Now we should have the new background image. Do the same procedures on any other images you want to replace, and then move on.
Part II: The UIFILE
Now we get to change some code to move some stuff around on the screen.
1. Close the Bitmap folder and expand the UIFILE folder, then the 1000 folder, and then click on 1033.
2. You should see a whole lot of script. Pretty much all we want to do here is possibly move the User Account List if it conflicts with your image.
3. You should see some code like this:
<element id=atom(contentcontainer0) layout=flowlayout(1,3,2,3) layoutpos=client content=argb(0,0,0,0)> <element id=atom(leftpanel) sheet=styleref(leftpanelss) layoutpos=left> </element>
That will align the user account list to the left. To move it to the right, replace it with this:
<element id=atom(contentcontainer0) layout=flowlayout(1,3,2,3) layoutpos=client content=argb(0,0,0,0)> <element id=atom(rightpanel) sheet=styleref(rightpanelss) layout=borderlayout() layoutpos=left width=384rp> </element>
4. Now click “Compile Script” and move on to the third section.
Part III: The Version Info
This will let you add your own tag to the login. Go to the Version Info Folder, then 1, then 1033.
The rest is pretty self explanitory.
Part IV: Installing
First, go to File > Save as… then go to the directory you want to save it to (Not your system32 folder yet). Type your filename, and make sure you put .exe on the end to make it the right type of file.
Now, you have one of two choices:
1: Boot into safe mode and overwrite the logonui.exe file in system32, or
2: Get a program like StyleXP or TuneUp Styler. (RECOMMANDED)
Hope this tutorial helped you.
Here’s what I made using this technique: EDIT (10.12.2006): I copy this article from others but it really works. Since I worked with login screens, and I can support any questions you may have. If you still have questions, leave any question here and I will make a reply as soon as I can. Astronomers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to take the first definitive images of a dark spot on Uranus. The elongated feature measures 1,100 miles by 1,900 miles (1,700 kilometers by 3,000 kilometers). This three-wavelength composite image was taken with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys on August 23, 2006. The research team found the dark spot again on August 24. The inset image shows a magnified view of the spot with enhanced contrast. Uranus's north pole is near the 3 o'clock position in this image. The bright band in the southern hemisphere is at 45 degrees south.
